Syrians revolt against the
French mandate. The 'Great Syrian Revolt' started from Jebel Al-Arab and was
commanded by Sultan Pasha Al-Atrash. The rebels fought against French troops
in Southern Syria, in and around Damascus, and elsewhere in Syria. France
suffered heavy casualities and used its iron fist in many occasions.
Damascus was air-bombed and parts of the old city were completely destroyed.
A Damascus quarter knows as "Sidi 'Amoud" was renamed "al-Hariqah" (the
fire) after the bombardment. The name is still used today.
