Pressured by continuous Syrian resistance, France held talks with national leaders of Syria. According to the Franco-Syrian Treaty, signed in Paris in 1936, the French granted limited independence for Syria, but French troops remained on Syrian soil. Pictures show Hashem Al-Atassi and Fares al-Khouri (2nd and 3rd from the left) signing the Treaty.
