Colonel Husni al-Zaim (shown in
picture) led the first military coup in Syria's
modern history, establishing a dictatorship in July 1949. He was overthrown
by another coup after 82 days. The year 1949 marked the beginning of a series of
military coups in Syria, a phenomenon that quickly spread to other countries in
the region.
