1 February 1958: Egyptian President Gamal Abdel-Nasser and Syrian President Shukri al-Quwatli sign the union treaty. Syria and Egypt become united under the United Arab Republic (UAR). The union lasted until 1961, when a military coup in Damascus declared Syria's withdrawal from the UAR.
