Syria lost the Golan heights to Israel during the Six Days War between Israel and Arab states. Before advancing into this strategic Syrian region, Israel had occupied Egyptian Sinai and the West Bank of Jordan. More than 100,000 Syrian citizens were forced to leave the Golan Heights.
