Foreign minister Farouk Al-Shara'a met with Israeli Prime Minster Ehud Barak in Washington DC. It was the highest-level meeting during 10 years of Syrian-Israeli peace talks. Syria and Israel had almost reached a peace agreement when Israel's refusal to withdraw from a small part of the Golan Heights caused the negotiations to collapse.
