Atrash, Sultan Pasha al- (1891-1982), Syrian revolutionary and national leader. Born in al-Qurayya village near Swaida. He partcipated in battles against the Ottoman Turks during the Arab Revolt. He raised the Arab flag over Damascus upon its liberation On September 29, 1918. However, Syria soon came under French mandate. Al-Atrash led the Syrian Revolut against the French in 1925. After major victories, the Revolt ended with al-Atrash leaving Syria for exile in Transjordan (now Jordan) then Hijaz (now Saudi Arabia). He returned to Syria in May 1937. Since then, he did not have much influence on internal politics. He was greatly mourned when he died in 1982.
