Azem, Assa’ad Pasha al- (1701-1757): Governor (Wali) of Damascus. He ruled the city for 12 years, which were marked by security and stability. He was exiled from Damascus and later killed in Ankara, Turkey after a dispute with the Ottoman Sultan. Among the buildings he left in Damascus are the Azem Palace and the Khan of Asa’ad Pasha.
