Idlibi, Ulfat (1912-): One of the most prominent female writers in Syria. Born and educated in Damascus. She started writing after the death of her son in 1947. Her first book, "Al-Qarar Al-Akheer" (The Final Decision) was chosen by BBC Arabic Radio Service as the best storybook in the Arab World for the year 1947. Her later works proved to be similarly successful. Among them are "Qessas Shamiyah" (Damascene Stories- 1954), "Wada'an Ya Dimashq" (Goodbye Damascus- 1963), "Wa Yadhaku Al-Shaytan" (And the Devil Laughs-1970), "Dimashq Ya Basmat Al-Hozn" (Damascus, the Sad Smile- 1980) and "Hikayet Jaddi" (The Story of My Grandfather- 1990). Some of her books were translated into more than 10 foreign languages.
