Khabour River: A tributary of the Euphrates River. Rising from the mountains of southeastern Turkey, it flows southeastward into Syrian territories to Al-Hasakah, then southward to join the Euphrates near Deir Az-Zor. The river has a total length of 320 km (200 miles). It is important for irrigating the fertile al-Jazirah region in northeastern Syria. Many dams were built on the river during the second half of the 20th century, increasing the total cultivated area to more than 4 million acres. This area irrigated by the Khabour River is Syria's leading source of wheat and other agricultural products.
