Correction Movement, the known name of the coup that led General Hafez al-Assad to power in November 16, 1970. The movement put and end to the political conflicts inside the ruling al-Baath Party and established stability inside Syria. The first step of the Correction Movement was to unify the Syrian political parties under the National Progressive Front NPF in 1972 and to reestablish the People’s Council (Parliament) and to issue a new constitution for the country (March 1973). In 1971, Assad was elected President with an overwhelming majority. Other achievements include the October War against Israel (1973), and major developmental economic projects.
