United Arab Republic (UAR): The official name of the Syrian-Egyptian union between 1958-1961. President Quwwatli of Syria and Nasser of Egypt signed the union pact on 22 February 1958 after a public referundum in both countries. Nasser was elected as the new republic's president, and Cairo, Egypt was chosen to be the capital. In 1960, Nasser abolished regional ministries in Syria in favour of a central government in Cairo. During the same year, socialist land reforms and nationalization of industry took place in Syria and Egypt. The union ended on 28 September 1961 with a military coup in Damascus, but Egypt maintaned the name 'United Arab Republic' for a next 9 years.
